Wee Wild Ones
For Wee Wild Ones, an underused portion of an existing shopping mall was reimagined as a daycare, transforming a previously inward-looking commercial space into a bright and engaging environment for children.
Large openings were carefully introduced into the mall’s existing exterior walls and roof, bringing daylight, views, and a stronger connection to the surrounding neighborhood deep into the space. These interventions create an environment that feels open, connected, and active while giving new purpose to the existing building.
The project reflects a broader shift taking place across North American cities, where aging malls and commercial plazas are increasingly being reconsidered as community infrastructure. As patterns of retail continue to evolve, these spaces offer opportunities to accommodate the programs neighborhoods increasingly need, from libraries and healthcare to education and childcare.
More than the adaptive reuse of a former retail space, Wee Wild Ones represents a small act of urban repair: transforming existing commercial fabric into a place that once again serves and strengthens its community.
