The Willow Play Cafe
Denizens of Design and DS Studio present The Willow Play Cafe, a thoughtful exercise in reimagining the term “daycare centre” in Toronto. Located in the city’s Junction neighbourhood, the project transforms a former dive bar into a family-focused cafe and immersive play environment that responds to a growing community of young parents and children. The result introduces a new kind of third space that supports connection, creativity, and everyday ritual.
The collaborative interior design and architecture teams began with a simple premise: create a cafe that feels grounded, warm, and familiar. Wood panelling, checkerboard linoleum flooring, vintage bentwood chairs, and softly patinated lighting establish a sense of comfort and memory. From this foundation, play unfolds naturally. A conceptual willow tree anchors the interior through form and movement, while millwork shifts into climbing structures and decorative walls conceal interactive elements. Play does not sit apart from the architecture. It lives within it.
Willow founder Christina DiAdamo envisioned a space rooted in STEM-based learning and the Reggio Emilia approach. Every material and feature supports curiosity, development, and independence. DS Studio shaped the play environments with soft forms, resilient surfaces, and gentle transitions that prioritize safety without limiting discovery. Integrated seating keeps parents close, reinforcing comfort and connection.
A walnut-clad counter welcomes guests, while a keyhole portal marks the threshold from cafe to play. Beyond, sculptural foam steps, rubber flooring, and arched niches create a flexible landscape for exploration, workshops, and celebrations. Throughout, vintage lighting and layered textures lend depth and authenticity.
The Willow Play Cafe sets a new benchmark for what a daycare centre in Toronto can be. It offers a cohesive, carefully crafted environment where families gather, children explore, and community takes root.
