Fire Station 45
Fire Station 45 is a new focal point within an emerging community near Ottawa’s Greenbelt — a prime example of public infrastructure design in Ottawa. Fire stations are highly functional buildings that combine the life and work of a firefighter, and this modern fire station design reflects that complexity. Our approach prioritized human-centred public building design, balancing the building’s critical function with everyday comfort.
DS Studio collaborated closely with Hobin Architecture to create a welcoming interior that complements the broader civic architecture of Ontario. Our shared goal was to deliver a future-ready civic architecture solution that supports both municipal service and community presence.
The design highlights striking material contrasts. In this predominantly concrete and steel structure, warmth is introduced through white oak. Custom millwork and carefully planned living quarters provide cozy communal and private areas — reinforcing the idea that design for municipal innovation can also feel personal and humane. Within the work zones, we introduced vivid reds and black hardware, creating a bold counterpoint to the oak, culminating in a red perforated metal stair that defines the building’s character.
