Heritage Renovation
We provide interior and exterior renovations to heritage buildings balancing municipal policy, functionality and preservation. We strive to balance original features with modern uses, preserving authenticity while meeting contemporary safety and functionality standards.
DS Studio led the heritage renovation and adaptive reuse of Walter House, an 1895 red brick building in Ottawa’s historic Centretown, for the Royal Society of Canada. The project transformed the former bed and breakfast into a modern institutional office and event space while preserving its historic character, original brick walls, residential warmth, and connection to the streetscape. A carefully designed addition using salvaged and colour-matched brick, flexible ground-floor planning, custom millwork, and movable furnishings create a contemporary workplace that supports events, collaboration, and public engagement while respecting the building’s heritage value.
